International medical conference recognition for respiratory service

The NELFT Community Respiratory Team and Basildon Hospital Respiratory team are to present a poster session at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) 2017 International Conference in Washington D.C. in May.

The conference is one of the largest gatherings of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine clinicians and researchers in the world.

Poster presentations are are important feature of scientific conferences and typically involve displays of paper posters illustrating data and research which then prompts discussion with peers attending the conference. Basildon and Brentwood CCG would like to congratulate the respiratory teams on their achievement.

The presentation at the ATS centenary meeting from May 19-24 2017 will be based on work carried out by the teams around care for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in Essex which have seen admissions to Basildon Hospital fall by 8%, the length of stay fall by a day and also a large number of patients being discharged within 24 hours.

COPD describes a group of lung conditions that make it difficult to empty air out of the lungs because your airways have been narrowed.

Jan Minter, Head of Long Term Conditions at NELFT NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Audits carried out by the NELFT Community respiratory Team and the Basildon Hospital Respiratory team have shown that our integrated service is making real changes to the lives of patients in Essex with COPD.

"Both of these audits were submitted to the American Thoracic Society for their centenary international meeting to be held in Washington DC in May and have been accepted for presentation. Their acceptance for presentation supports the benefits of critical analysis within our practice and encourages the efforts made by all to improve care for our patients locally.

"Integrated working between Primary, Community and Secondary Care has shown benefits within the local system as a whole, providing a focused and effective system of care for our patients with respiratory disease."

The NELFT Community Respiratory Team and Basildon Hospital Respiratory team have had poster presentations accepted by the ATS for their International meetings for the last two years. In September 2016 they  presented work at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) in and last March poster presentation at the Royal College of Physicians meeting in Harrogate won third prize.
